Learners of various Atlantis primary schools recently had a interactive biology lesson, thanks to Stone Dragon.
Microscopes, screens and lab equipment were on hand, thanks to the non-profit organisation that aims to ignite learners’ passion for education and learning.
Grade 6 and 7 learners from Hermes, Reygersdal and Berzelia primary schools were the beneficiaries of these workshops, run by Stone Dragon volunteers.
The lessons, which are aligned with the national curriculum, focus on natural science and ecology. Lessons about landfills and recycling are also part of the workshops.
GreenCape, a non-profit working within the Atlantis Special Economic Zone for Green Technologies (ASEZ), has partnered with Stone Dragon for the roll-out of these workshops in Atlantis schools.
According GreenCape, the hope is to provide learners with practical learning experiences, igniting excitement and a passion for education, specifically natural and physical sciences, while providing support to the teachers.
“The ASEZ anticipates a broad range of skills, and competencies will be required as investment in the area grows in the coming years,” explained Ursula Wellmann, skills and stakeholder manager for GreenCape.
“These workshops are an investment in Atlantis youth so they ultimately gain access to employment opportunities within the ASEZ.”
Further workshops are planned for four more primary schools this term. Workshops for other schools are planned for the rest of the year, with more planned at all remaining schools in the terms that follow.
