The Avondale senior majorettes (drummies) will take on the best that South Africa has to offer when they compete in the elite group next year, after finishing second overall in the President’s League.

The drummies caught much more than their batons at the SA Majorette and Cheerleading Association (SAMCA) national championships, which was held in East London from Sunday 23 June and Saturday 29 June.

“The team was flawless and bagged no fewer than five gold medals, one silver and one bronze at the event held at the Inkwenkwezi Private Game Park,” according to their head coach, Kaylene Coordom.

She adds that the 19 seniors worked hard for their success and made the community very proud.

“The team has been competing since February in the Western Province competitions and qualified in May for the national competition,” Coordom said. “We are all overwhelmed by the medals won and it was the first time in the history of our senior majorettes that they won five gold medals and finished second overall.”

She also explained the team experienced a tough journey, but kept working hard and managed to raise funds by selling rotis and braai plates each week so they can reach the national competition.

The seniors formed part of the President’s Majorettes category and competed against 20 other teams.

“The team received gold for the non prop, the high mace, the high flag, small drill squad and the high baton categories,” said Coordom.

“The group also secured an all groups first place and finished second in the Presidents League Champion of Champions.”
