The Zimkele Boxing Club in Witsand needs financial assistance so two of its star boxers can participate in an international tournament.
William Andreas and Samuel Dlokolo has been teaching the art of boxing to kids in the community since 2006 X free of charge. He has about 30 learners between the ages of nine and 18 years who regularly attend the classes. They have class every day for two hours in a 6m x 3m container with no ventilation, one boxing bag and only a few gloves.
Andreas is passionate about boxing and says it is a means to keep children off the streets and out of trouble. For many years he has paid transport costs to tournaments and any other fees from his own pocket.
“Our biggest challenge is finding a space where we can practise,” Andreas says. “We also don’t have any equipment, but we must continue.”
Local star boxer Mtsempua Mthembu intends taking on Tysen Essau over 10 rounds for the title of Western Cape Featherweight Champion, while another, Zusiphe Timakwe, will take on Mzolisi Mthalane over four rounds. Timakwe and Mthalane will make their professional debuts in the Straw weight division.
The tournament will take place at the University of Stellenbosch’s Coetzenberg Sport Complex on Sunday 28 May and will be televised.
The main event will feature Xolisani Ndongeni and Razak Nettey Ghana. The contest will be a 10-round International Lightweight.
The main supporting bout will be a South African Flyweight title fight featuring Thembelani Nxoshe, the champion from Mdantsane, and Dalisiwe Komani, the challenger from Khayelitsha. The boxers need R3 000 per kit, which includes for boots, trunks, gown, and mouth guards.
Anyone who is able to assist is asked to contact William Andreas on 064 372 4307 or 063 056 1297.
