This month is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and despite widespread perceptions about the illness it affects everyone, irrespective gender and age.
Breast Cancer can affect both men and women, and men should also perform breast examinations monthly, while women should do so at least 10 days after menstruation. Breast tissue is not just found in the breast, but also in the areas surrounding it, from one’s armpits up to the inner part of the upper arm right down to the elbow.
Any persistent bumps or nodules should be medically examined. Not all nodules in the breasts are necessarily cancerous. Bumps can be caused by hormones or because of fatty tissue in the area. But breast cancer is a reality that claims the lives of thousands of people yearly, but through early detection the disease can be beaten.
Patients can contact the local hospital on 021 571 8088, or the outpatient department, to make an appointment to see a professional about any abnormality they pick up on.
Specialist examinations are referred to Groote Schuur Hospital. The clinic is open on a Friday and, as it is a walk-in clinic, patients don’t need to make an appointment, but patients should note that the first 30 patients will be seen.
Patients who struggle with transport expenses can make use of the Healthnet ambulance free of charge. Simply book a ride through the Wesfleur booking clerk.
. Show support for breast cancer treatment by wearing a wearing pink ribbon this month. Also, be sure to join Relay for Life at the Mamre Sports Grounds on 27-28 October.
