Cancervive is taking to the roads of South Africa for the eighth time to educate, promote cancer awareness and spread hope. More than 60 bikers (cancer survivors and supporters) will travel through the Western Cape in 10 days to raise awareness of one of South Africa’s most widespread illnesses.

On Sunday 2 September, the group will have a mass departure from Cape Town to Darling. They are inviting everyone to bring their bicycles along and join them in spreading love all around Cape Town.

Some of the towns the group will also visit are Vredenburg, Langebaan, Atlantis, Worcester, Piketberg and Durbanville, Velddrif, Piketberg, Tulbagh and Robertson. There, survivors will head to schools, hospitals, factories and other places to share their own personal journeys of recovery and lend their care and support to those affected by the condition.

Catch the illness early

Cancervive (pronounced: can survive) was started by cancer survivors with a mission to promote, educate and create awareness about cancer – including the “shy”, less popular cancers – especially in its early, more treatable stages. Cancer myths include a widespread belief that the condition is mainly a “white person’s disease”.

But the data shows that the main difference, racially, is access to and seeking of treatment, as well as a lack of knowledge about the causes of cancer, including the impact of lifestyle choices.
Get checked
Around a third of cancer deaths are due to five leading behavioural and dietary risks:

. high body mass index

. low fruit and vegetable intake

. lack of physical activity

. tobacco use

. and alcohol use.

Many affected South Africans are in remote, rural areas, where information on the many forms of cancer is hard to find, or is simply not available.
