South Africa’s national cricket team continues to impress on the world stage. Already number one in the one day international (ODI) format of the game, the Proteas are injecting large doses of excitement into their style of play. Their current tour of New Zealand has already delivered dozens of memorable moments, which bodes very well for our champions’ trophy hopes.
On the local football front, there are contrasting fortunes for the David and Goliath of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) this season. Cape Town City are maintaining their magical run, while Orlando Pirates fans are hoping the earth would open and swallow them in. The six goal drubbings at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns, and a 2-2 draw at Cape Town Stadium not withstanding, the Happy People have been anything but. Pirates’ season is a write-off. And they’ll be praying their new Swedish coach Kjell Jonevret can inspire an immediate turnaround.
Slow clap for Siya Kolisi, who has been named skipper of the Stormers. The loose-forward is the first African player to captain the Western Province franchise. The pressure will be huge. A gruelling Super Rugby season is underway. We do, however, know Kolisi has earned the captain’s armband and is more than capable of leading the team all the way to the final. Fingers crossed.
The 2017 Cape Town Cycle Tour is here. Some of us are a ball of nerves X mainly because we haven’t trained enough, and now race day is upon us.
If there’s one item you simply have to put on your bucket list (and tick it off) it is cycling the “Argus” (as it will be known by many for years to come, given the central role in it that newspaper once enjoyed). It is the world’s largest timed cycle race. In all, 35 000 riders from all parts of the planet will take to Cape Town’s streets in pursuit of a medal at the finish line 109 km later.
Cyclists from Atlantis, Mamre, Pella and surrounds will also participate, flying the flag for our community. Please wish us luck!
There’s so much sport on the cards for March. The tennis and formula one seasons start. Football-wise, there’s the small matter of the English FA Cup round of 16 to look forward to. Manchester United is in for a tricky assignment against Chelsea. Eish!
Enjoy all the sports on offer. And let the good times roll…
