On Friday, 5 December, the Atlantis Sector for Disability brought together stakeholders and disability organisations at Robin Hill Special School for a powerful day of awareness and community engagement.

Despite the smaller turnout from the wider community, the event strongly underscored the vital role of persons with disabilities in both society and South Africa.

The programme extended beyond speeches, as organisations proudly displayed products crafted by their members, a clear demonstration that they do not wait passively for opportunities but actively create them, contributing through their skills, innovation and determination.

Atlantis community members witnessed this commitment first hand as various stakeholders addressed them. Representatives from government departments and local authorities were present, alongside the Human Rights Commission, which advised the community on their rights and responsibilities.

Disability organisations including Lief en Leed from Mamre and Pella, Robin Hill Special School, Orion, Emmanuel SCC and Atlantis School of Skills also contributed to the event. They informed the community about their operations and the vital support they provide to children and adults in need.

After the formal proceedings, guests and children enjoyed refreshments made possible through generous donations. Rotarian Josie Norfolk of the Rotary E Club, together with her son Jim and daughter Amber from Australia, donated over 400 food items, snack packs, sweet packs and special dietary provisions. An ice cream truck from Josie also added to the festive atmosphere, ensuring that everyone could cool down and enjoy a treat on the warm day.

The Atlantis Disability Rights Awareness Day highlighted the strength, creativity and spirit of persons with disabilities, a message that touched hearts, uplifted the community and reminded everyone of the value of inclusion.
