Volkswagen enthusiasts recently got together to form the well-known brand’s logo as part of a documentary about the much loved South African VW Citi Golf.

“In February 2017, we met up with this guy, Gunter Blokken, at Killarney Racetrack and invited him to join us at a crew campout,” Stan Jacobs of VW MK1 Owners SA, a social club for Golf enthusiasts, related.

Blokken had come to Cape Town to do research for a documentary film about the legendary Citi Golf.

He returned to Belgium and immediately started planning his next trip to South Africa and the documentary.

For Blokken the documentary needed to have different elements. It was in pursuit of this that his recent visit started with a trip to Uitenhage in the Eastern Cape to the Volkswagen factory, where he also conducted an interview with John Lemmon, author of the VW Citi history book.

“The next chapter was to show the kind of person that chooses a car the factory ceased producing in 2009,” said Jacobs, “ and it was while sitting around a campfire that we got the idea of making a VW logo to place only only on VW Citi Golfs.”

“The idea was discussed and we needed to get more partners involved. MK1 Lifestyle Atlantis came on board to help make this vision a reality. We named the event ATL MK1 Logo Day. Gershon Booysen and Ricardo Skippers from MK1 Lifestyle Atlantis got us a suitable sports ground at Wesfleur in Atlantis.”

According to Jacobs, the City of Cape Town supported this initiative after the club had discussions with Sub-council 1 chairperson Cllr Cynthia Clayton. “We also partnered with Weskus Nuus and Radio Atlantis, which helped us by placing the logo on their platforms.”

On the Logo Day, 48 cars participated in forming the Volkswagen logo, which was captured on video.

“Thank you to all our partners and every VW MK1 petrolhead who came out to support the event,” said Jacobs.
