Fourteen people were left injured, two of them critically, on Tuesday 17 September when a bakkie and light delivery vehicle collided head-on on the Dassenberg Road in Atlantis.

According to ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring, paramedics along with the Fire and Rescue Services, Life Healthcare and the Western Cape Medical Services arrived on the scene before 08:00 to find a bakkie and a light delivery vehicle on the side of the road.

“[When paramedics arrived] the Fire and Rescue Services had already extricated three patients who had been trapped, and were busy extricating the fourth,” he said. “On assessment, medics found that a man and woman had both sustained critical injuries, while 12 others had sustained minor to serious injuries.”

The patients were treated and the critically injured provided with advanced life support interventions. The critically injured woman was airlifted by private medical helicopter to a nearby hospital.

Meiring said the remaining patients were transported by ambulance to nearby hospitals.

Details of how the accident occurred were still being investigated at the time of going to print.
