Lawson Hill from Atlantis is now in the lead to be elected for Puma’s elite running ambassador programme.
Hill, 17, who attends Milnerton High School, participated in the year’s first School of Speed meet at Coetzenburg Athletics Stadium in Stellenbosch on Saturday 26 January.
The Puma School of Speed series, for u-15 to u-19 athletes, was launched in partnership with Stillwater Sports in 2016 to identify exceptional young South African athletes, and is headed by the world’s fastest man, Olympian Usain Bolt.
Hill dominated the 100 m u-17 sprint and ran away with gold after she bolted down the track in 13,08 seconds. “To prepare for races I train with my team and I try my best to live a healthy lifestyle,” she said.
“Last year, I came third in the 100m, so I entered again this year because I loved the experience, and to improve my finishing position.”
The teen says the secret to her success is a balance between athletics and academia as well as a great support structure.
“My family and friends are my biggest motivation, they always encourage me to do better,” Hill says. “For me it’s all about excellent time management. I am dedicated to both my academics and athletics. They are both demanding, but I love them equally.”
