Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) football, Australian Open tennis, South Africa vs Sri Lanka cricket. With the new year already well underway, sports fans are absolutely spoiled for choice.

In fact, you don’t even need to look further than our local sports fields to know you’re in sports heaven.

Cape Town City FC continues to blaze a trail in the premier soccer league. The happy ending to their fairytale story looks more and more likely.

They’ve already added the Telkom Knockout title to their collection. Few would bet against the newbies going the distance and claiming the ABSA Premiership trophy as well.

AFCON has also been delivering quality excitement in Gabon. It would, quite obviously, have been lekker to see Bafana Bafana competing there, but the other nations are more than holding their own at the biennial football competition. I am at pains to predict an eventual winner. But the dreamer in me feels Ghana is more than deserving, if for no other reason than their consistent failure at the final hurdle. The country’s fans are praying for a miracle!

Further afield, in the English Premier League that fight for the top four is tighter than our wallets during the month of January (ke Janu-worry boss!).

Chelsea is still leading the way. It has Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool and Man City snapping at its heels. All of those teams have been in superb form.

In sixth place is a certain Manchester United. I think Man United supporters have resigned themselves to the fact that league glory is out of reach. And even a Champions League finish is starting to look very unlikely. It’s tough being a United fan these days. You’re a ball of nerves during every match, hoping for the best. The next few weeks are crucial. Tough fixtures ahead. Brace yourselves for fyn poepies in abundance.

Rugby fans are in for a real treat. The World Seven series continues. And then, of course, there’s the small matter of the Super Rugby championship. Folks X our beloved Stormers need us. We need to cheer them on at the home games. Fill a taxi, bus, anything – just get to Newlands and help get our boys over the finish line X asseblief. Ek vra mooi.

To the Proteas X thank you for the magic during this Sri Lanka series. Moreover, dankie for the memories over the last few months. Can’t wait to see you back at the top of the ranking across all three formats of the game.
