Bluegums United, the Bonteheuwel, Cape Town soccer club, was crowned champions of the Robinvale Spurs’ annual tournament.
At the tournament, which took place over the second weekend of March at Robinvale Sports Field, Bluegum beat a spirited Greenwood team on penalties in a contested, but exciting match.
Both teams had the crowd of about 3 000 people jumping and cheering as the game switched from one end to the other, with Bluegums taking the overall winner’s prize of R5 000 and a floating trophy.
Greenwood was the runner-up, walking away with a cash prize of R3 000.
In the play-offs for the third and fourth place, Hanover Leeds walked off with a whopping R2 000 third prize and Everton Spurs R1 000, with a score of 3-1.
Wesfleur was the only club from Atlantis that reached the quarter-finals, losing to Greenwood.
None of the local participating clubs – Robinvale Spurs, Atlantis City, Arsenal or Atlantis Leeds – showed any form on the day.
Congratulations to the Cape Town team.
