GreenCape hosted its fourth Atlantis Renewable Energy Challenge (AREC) involving Atlantis schools from 10 to 19 July.
Lindi van Staden, project coordinator of the organisation, which aims to foster a green consciousness in the development of the economy, said the competition this year revolved around an art challenge, focusing on graffiti.
“Learners were given the opportunity to showcase their artistic abilities, with a specific focus on renewable energy,” she explained, “and this required key subjects such as maths, science and even engineering, which are all brought together through art.”
To prepare for the competition, GreenCape went on the road visiting all the schools in Atlantis, Van Staden said, encouraging their learners to participate in this year’s challenge, in this way promoting enthusiasm and an interest in renewable energy.
This augurs well for factoring the green option into the economy’s future, with initiatives such as AREC promoting alternative energy innovation ideas and careers that implement them.
