Mamre Library celebrated SA Library Week with events aimed at creating awareness of the library, encouraging reading and promoting it not only as a space for learning but a social space, where community members can interact and engage with each other.
“During library week refreshments were served inside the library to facilitate this process and get community members to interact with each over a cup of tea, says senior librarian Nizam Bray.
The library also teamed up with other organisations such as Working on Fire, which hosted a fire awareness workshop for 35 children; Marina Jenkins of Koeberg Power Station held an information session with the men to enlighten them on the the power station, Eskom and other energy-related issues, and a lively discussion ensued after her presentation.
Well-known Mamre singer/songwriter/actor Oswald Johannes delighted with “stoepstories” and songs about the local area.. Library Week ended with a bang, when the library hosted a Made in Mamre Market, where community members could sell their handmade/home-made products.
Bray explains this initiative was a partnership with the Child Welfare and Lief en Leed, an organisation for persons with disabilities. “We also had a marketing initiative, where more than 40 applications for library cards were captured. Library week was a huge success with many people signing up at the library and at the service point at the Paradise Lane Hall. The initiatives also saw many new and a few old faces coming to the library.
