A new process for obtaining a police clearance certificate (PCC), to mitigate identity fraud is being introduced by the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Members of the public are no longer expected to deliver their documents to the Criminal Record Centre in Pretoria. It is now the sole responsibility of the police to deliver the form to the Criminal Record Centre on behalf of the applicant. Once a week the police (in the different clusters) will courier the forms to Pretoria.

Now, the applicant must produce a certified copy of their SA ID or official passport, to attach to their application.

The PCC is a document issued by Police Criminal Record and Crime Scene Management stating whether any crime exists against an individual.

Once all is finalised, the Criminal Record Centre sends a certificate to the police station where the form was handed in. The cost involved is R114.
