On Sunday, 27 November the City will celebrate the switching on of the festive lights in its original form for the first time in two years. The theme this year is City of Cape Town – City of Hope.

The programme will start at 16:00 with the switching on of the lights expected to be at 20:30. It is a great way to kick off the festive season so please do go and enjoy it with your family. It is absolutely free and no tickets are required. The event will take place at the Grand Parade.

. The City has a social package for the 2022-’23 financial year which totals to R4,7 billion. This includes R2,3 billion for indigent relief and R1,45 billion for rates relief. We urge those who qualify for the indigent benefit to apply. Those who have qualified previously must remember to make an application yearly. Pensioners are an exception; they apply every three years. If you want more information, please get in contact with your local ward councillor, visit your Subcouncil office or visit the City’s website.

. In the second week of October the City recorded 339 arrests and issued 71 971 fines. In addition, officers recovered over a dozen firearms. At a public meeting with the Provincial Minister of Community Safety and Police Oversight, Reagan Allen, and our Mayco Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith, we heard about the fantastic successes that we are seeing from our LEAP officer programme. This programme is a joint initiative between the City and the Provincial Government.

These officers undergo the required training, including Peace Officer Training, bylaw training and also obtain a Traffic Warden Certificate. They also assist other enforcement agencies with crime prevention and are deployed and funded by Province. Deployment is made according to where the highest numbers of crime is experienced.

Among the precincts is Atlantis, which falls within our Subcouncil. Atlantis has benefited greatly. A number of arrests have been made and several firearms have been taken off the streets.
