An opportunity of a lifetime awaits 22-year-old Shaun Carolissen from Atlantis.
A member of the Stellenbosch University (SU) Choir, he has the opportunity to take part in the prestigious world choir eisteddfod, The Llangollen International Music Eisteddfod in Wales.
He is currently studying Theology at Stellenbosch and has a strong passion for music and culture.
“Being a member of the SU Choir and a cultural representative of Listen, Live and Learn (a flagship student accommodation programme for senior students) is a clear indication of this passion,” Carolissen says.
Raised by a single parent, the financial burden lies heavily on his mother’s shoulders, and therefore he is seeking any financial assistance to participate in the eisteddfod.
“I am privileged to be a member of the SU Choir and to have family and friends who are extremely supportive of my ambitious endeavours. I am a worthy recipient of the funding, as I am in dire need of it and will not take any financial assistance for granted.”
Founded in 1936, the SU Choir (Afrikaans: Stellenbosch Universiteitskoor) is the oldest choir in South Africa. The current conductor, André van der Merwe, was appointed at the beginning of 2003.
It has toured overseas extensively and has won critical acclaim for its performances.
So, aside from being viewed as a leading South African choral ensemble, the SU Choir is also seen as one of South Africa’s most outstanding youth development and choral programmes. For 82 years the choir has reflected the changes in wider society and today stands as a testament to the power of music to bring about diversity and harmony across the social divide.
The Llangollen International Music Eisteddfod will take place from 29 June to 15 July 2018 in Wales.
The choir will travel to Wales via London and Bath, where they have been invited to give performances. Participation in the Llangollen Eisteddfod marks the beginning of the SU Choir’s bid to broaden its experience and continue to measure itself against the best in the world. The Llangollen Eisteddfod, in addition to being a world renowned choral music festival, is also a celebration of music, dance and culture of nations around the globe.
Participation in this festival is an opportunity for showcasing talent and, as importantly, for learning, sharing and gaining profound experience not only of the best choral music in the world but also of the cultures and values that produce them.
On its return to South Africa the choir will participate at the Interkultur World Choir Games being held in Tshwane this year as featured special guests. Any form of contribution or assistance would be highly appreciated.
