Police ‘hands-on’ over coming season

“Another year has flashed by so quickly, it seems, and we are standing at the door of a new year with new goals and activities,” said Col Cyril Nkuna, Atlantis Police Station commander.

“Another year has flashed by so quickly, it seems, and we are standing at the door of a new year with new goals and activities,” said Col Cyril Nkuna, Atlantis Police Station commander.

“It is my privilege to wish every police employee and the entire community of Atlantis, Mamre, Pella and Witsand a blessed, peaceful and prosperous festive season.”

Nkuna said the sacrifices the first responders make throughout the year do not go unnoticed.

“It is a known fact that the festive season presents its own challenges as far as crime is concerned, and we would like to encourage all members of the community to maintain vigilance and not drop their guard.”

The station commander said during the financial year (April-October 2022), there had been a positive increase in police-initiated prevention, including possession of drugs and driving under the influence of liquor.

“Relating to lowlights, we have experienced an increase in contact crimes namely robbery common, sexual offences, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and common assault, especially domestic violence-related, in which substance abuse plays a huge part. We have initiatives underway to stabilise such scenarios.”

There’s also high visibility in hot-spot areas and joint operations will be conducted over the festive season, with no mercy for perpetrators, with criminal behaviour given short shrift and dealt with accordingly. He warned the police have authority to arrest anyone clearly breaking the law, including on the road.

Nkuna thanked all security companies, Law Enforcement, Metro Police, traffic, the Community Policing Forum (CPF), neighbourhood watches, stakeholders and members of Atlantis police for their continued commitment and dedication to, and unwavering support for, the achievement of the police’s objectives.

“Without these dedicated partners this station would not be able to face the challenges thrown at us.

“Our hope for 2023 is to strengthen the community policing relationship within our precinct, which is key to creating a safer and more secure environment for all members of our community. We look forward to working with you in the years to come.”
