The Bellville Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit is investigating a deeply distressing case of kidnapping following an incident at a local shopping centre on Saturday 28 June.
According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi the complainant said she had gone to the centre with her 9-day-old baby when she felt nauseous and had to go to the bathroom. She left her newborn in the care of the individual who had accompanied her. “On her return the person of interest and baby were missing,” he said.
Authorities have since launched an urgent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the infant.
The Bellville FCS Unit is leading the probe and has opened a case of kidnapping.
A public appeal has been made for any information that could assist the investigation. Members of the public who may have witnessed the incident or who have any knowledge of the whereabouts of the infant or the person of interest were urged to come forward.
Anyone with information was requested to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
