It’s taken just 65 working days to get Saxonsea Junior High School done, thanks to an effective Rapid School Build partnership between the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) and the City of Cape Town.
Abel Duiker, chairperson of the school’s governing body, thanked GVK-Siyazama Hugo, Nasser and Ismail, the main contractor, and then Flexo Construction, the local contractor Michael Marote, senior and junior, Chris Carstens and the two community liaison officers as well as the whole school governing body of Saxonsea High School and all other local SMMEs that partook in this venture.
The Atlantis high school is now partly up and running. It forms part of the Rapid School Build partnership. “We have made alternative arrangements to accommodate the learners while the final touches on additional classrooms are completed,” MEC David Maynier explained.
“This includes using alternative rooms in the schools temporarily (halls and computer labs), with the teachers allocated a new class in advance of the school year. We are also looking at external venues where necessary, and in a small number of cases, schools will implement rotating timetables to ensure learners can be accommodated.”
Maynier and Mayor Gordon Hill-Lewis appealed for communities’ support in delivering the new schools and classrooms needed.
“We’d also like to thank the residents of the surrounding areas for their support during the construction period,” Maynier added.
This group effort demonstrates what can be achieved in the province and beyond when everyone works towards the same goal of providing quality education for all children, the MEC concluded.
