Suncep, the University of Stellenbosch’s Centre for Pedagogy in the Faculty of Education, hosted supplementary tuition programmes to just under 500 pupils in Springbok, Worcester, Atlantis, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.
The sessions were offered during the school holidays, from 3 to 7 July, mostly to Grade 10 to 12. The Atlantis pupils, whose supplementary tuition programme is funded by the Atlantis Industrial Initiative, attended their week-long session at Atlantis Secondary School, while Transhex Operations (Pty) Ltd and West Coast Resources are jointly sponsoring the session for the learners in Springbok.
The tutors were leading teachers or curriculum advisors, exponents in their subjects, in provincial education departments.
“The focus of these interventions is to give pupils the opportunity to improve their results in Mathematics and Physical Sciences,” explained Dr Trevor van Louw, Director of Suncep, “with the aim of qualifying for higher education after completing school.
“Suncep also strives to make more pupils keen to choose science-related careers.”
The only Suncep group that did not attend classes during the holidays were the SciMathUS students.
SciMathUS is a year-long university preparation programme that affords students from educationally disadvantaged circumstances who have not qualified for higher education a second opportunity to rewrite specific subjects to gain access to higher education.
Applications to SciMathUS will be opened in November.
