Executive Mayor Patricia de Lille and the executive committee of the Mamre Communal Property Association (MCPA) had a productive meeting to discuss issues relating to development for the community of Mamre.

During the meeting that took place on Sunday 27 May, an in-principle agreement was reached to develop a memorandum of agreement setting out roles and responsibilities between the community and the City of Cape Town.

The memorandum of agreement will set out the strategy for the development of the 5 000 hectares of the Mamre restitution land.

The land is owned by the community and managed by the Mamre Communal Property Association, to which it had already been transferred in February 2013 by the national government.

The plan includes using the communal land for further housing opportunities.

Besides the ownership of the land, the community has at its disposal R8 million in trust that is managed by the City of Cape Town.

The proposed development project for Mamre fits in with the Transport Orientated Development Plan of the City, as MyCiTi has already been implemented in the area.

The Executive Mayor agreed to implement a structure and plan between the City and the MCPA to take the developments forward.
