A 26-year-old man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for murder after pleading guilty.

According to Sgt Noloyiso Rwexana, the incident took place in Witsand on 20 November 2016 at about 03:30 when a 15-year-old youth approached the accused, Aviwe Mgungubali, and asked for a cigarette while he was on his cellphone.

The youngster persisted in his request, upsetting the accused who reached into his pocket for a knife and stabbed the young man in his chest.

The victim was taken to Wesfleur Hospital and later died from his injuries. The accused entered into a plea bargain with the state and admitted to stabbing the deceased.

The detective, in partnership with the senior state prosecutor and the deceased’s family, agreed to the plea and the sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment.

During the investigation it was noted that Mgungubali was also a licenced firearm holder, but he had to be declared unfit to possess a firearm owing to the seriousness of the crime he committed.

Rwexana says police management is pleased with the sentence.
