Dankie Stooooormers!

Three wins from three to start the Super Rugby campaign is amazing in anyone’s book. And it sets us up rather nicely for a challenging Australasian tour. The games abroad are gruelling, but confidence is high. And naturally we will keep backing our boykies from our couches, cheering them on via the tv.

With the athletics season upon us, already there have been some notable performances by our country’s cream of the crop. Caster Semenya has already clocked a personal best time in the 3 000 m. She, along with the rest of big-name athletes, have an eye on the world championships in August. And lest we forget, a certain Wayde van Niekerk, who is almost certain to let his opponents eat dust again this year.

Slow clap for a youngster from Atlantis, Matthew Samuels, who continues to blaze a trail on the worldwide ice skating circuit. The 18-year-old recently competed at the junior world championships in Taipei. His qualification for the event is a remarkable story in itself, having gained the required number of points to take part, at other international events. Matthew is a world champion in the making. Mark my words! His sister Abigail is equally brilliant, and already has dozens of ice skating trophies and titles to her credit. An even louder round of applause, please, to their parents who, week in and week out, are selling plates of braai and hosting karaokes to raise funds to keep their kids on the ice. Bunch of legends!

Pity about the Cape Town Cycle Tour. The gale force winds spoiled the party for 35 000 riders at the world’s largest timed cycle race. Thankfully, the Atlantis cyclists did not get blown away.

I can well imagine the disappointment of riders from overseas. All that money spent on flights and hotels, all that time spent training – all for niks.

  • But there’s good news. Those who were meant to participate in this year’s cancelled race get first dibs on entries for the 2018 edition, before organisers open it up to the general public. So see you at the start line next year!Keep the conversation going with Robin on Facebook or Twitter: @RobinAdamsSport or send an e-mail to: robinadamstv@gmail.com.
