The newly formed Mamre Project was officially launched on Friday 23 November at the Tori Oso – Geselshuisie on the Mamre Werf.

This unique non-profit organisation aims to empower local women entrepreneurs with cottage industries to become financially independent, by creating markets for them to sell their goods at, and generate an income.

One of them, the Mamre Community Christmas Market, which falls directly under the group’s banner, will take place for the third year running on Saturday 1 December at Tori Oso.

The aim if the market is so local people can start their Christmas shopping – purchasing unique, carefully hand-crafted items – and supporting a good cause at the same time.

The proceeds of such markets are channelled back directly into the community.

The day includes live entertainment by local artists as well as stoepstories with Oom Ossie Johannes and a Movie Day and Night.

The Christmas lights will be switched on at 19:00.

While exploring the arts and craft tables, kids can enjoy the Movie Day, the first movie starting at 10:00. Tickets at R50 per child include a hotdog, juice and popcorn.

The Movie Night starts at 19:30 and tickets at R100 per person – which includes a wings and chips basket and a cold drink – tickets are available from Tori Oso.

People will also be able to explore the Mamre Werf Heritage Walk route on their own, or with a guide.
