The City of Cape Town has been hosting the Driver of the Year competition for 27 years now and over the years it has grown in prominence.
This year a total of 130 drivers took to the track to pit their skills against each other for the top spot in each category. After a series of preparation and elimination rounds, 60 drivers made the cut to the final round.
The winners on the day were:
.Aden Zass (Ndabeni Fleet Department), light motor vehicle
.Mario Peters (Schaapkraal Solid Waste Department), rigid vehicle
.Teano Tompson (Tygerberg Bulk Water Supply Department), articulated vehicle
This annual event aims to improve the standard and skill of our drivers. Additionally, it aims to help minimise the damage to vehicles and equipment, reduce high fuel costs and the loss of working hours as a result of vehicle crashes. Drivers are also made aware of good driving practices and the issue of road safety is reinforced.
“I am proud to mention that the City boasts some highly-skilled drivers. Fleet management and safety are high on our list of priorities as it relates to protecting our employees and our assets. This will ensure that our workforce will have the means to render an efficient and effective service to our residents,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services, Councillor Raelene Arendse.
This year the Driver of the Year Awards ceremony coincided with the International Labour Organisation’s (ILO) World Day for Safety and Health at Work. This is an annual international campaign that highlights the health and safety of all employees in the work environment.
